EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES TO ENHANCE LEARNER ENGAGEMENT THROUGH INNOVATIVE METHODS IN MODERN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING ✍️ Sobirova Vazira
Introduction
Today, English is not only a means of communication, but also a global key to modern technology, science, business, and education. In Uzbekistan, attention to English language learning is steadily increasing. Teaching English deeply in schools, lyceums, and higher education institutions and developing students’ communicative skills has become a top priority. However, the limitations of traditional teaching methods have highlighted the need for modern approaches.
Interactive Methods: The Key to a New Era
In modern pedagogy, “interactive methods” place the learner at the center of the teaching process. For example, CLT (Communicative Language Teaching) emphasizes learning a language through communication. Students engage in real-life scenarios such as ordering at a restaurant, having conversations at the airport, or welcoming a guest, thereby immersing themselves in practical language use.
TPR (Total Physical Response) is highly effective in engaging beginners. The teacher gives oral commands, and students respond physically: “Stand up!”, “Touch your nose!”, “Jump three times!” This method synchronizes language with movement, making learning more memorable.
Gamification introduces elements of competition into the learning process. Earning points, leveling up, and completing team tasks encourages students to participate actively and enthusiastically.
Technological Approaches and the Use of Artificial Intelligence
Mobile apps have become essential tools for language learning. Platforms such as Duolingo, Quizlet, and Memrise help learners build vocabulary and improve memory retention through fun and engaging activities.
AI-based tools like ChatGPT and ELSA Speak offer valuable support for practicing conversation, correcting pronunciation, and improving writing skills. Students can use ChatGPT to discuss any topic, identify their mistakes, and receive instant feedback.
Student-Centered Learning
While traditional lessons focus on the teacher’s role, modern methods prioritize student engagement. Learners become active participants, which enhances their critical thinking, inquiry skills, and ability to communicate.
Speaking clubs, debate sessions, and mini projects allow learners to express themselves in realistic contexts. These methods help students go beyond grammar and foster the confidence to articulate their thoughts freely in English.
Challenges and Solutions
One of the main challenges in rural areas is the lack of textbooks and technological resources. However, creative solutions can overcome this barrier. For example, using offline resources, mobile applications, and even organizing mobile speaking clubs can boost students’ interest in learning English.
Another issue is teachers’ resistance or lack of readiness for modern approaches. Therefore, it’s essential to offer continuous training, webinars, and methodological guides. Expanding peer-exchange seminars in Tashkent and regional centers would support teacher development.
Conclusion
Effective English teaching goes beyond rote memorization of textbooks and grammar. To achieve high results, it’s important to ignite students’ interest in the language, turn them into active classroom participants, and integrate technology into lessons. Every teacher should create their own “creative lab” and treat each lesson as a stage where language becomes a tool for expression.
English is not just a subject; it is a medium of culture, intellect, and communication with the future.
